Resident Choreographer


Meet Gillmer

Mr. Duran was born in Barquisimeto, Venezuela. He studied at the Fundacion Arte Nuevo and has danced professionally with the National Ballet of Caracas, Ballet Nuevo Mundo, Danzahoy, Tulsa Ballet Theatre and the 2010-11 will be his eighth season with Eugene Ballet Company. He has worked with choreographers such as, Vicente Nebrada, Luz Urdaneta, Jacques Brocket, Maria Rovira, Mauricio Wainrot, Robert Battle, Daniel Pelzig and Edwaard Liang among others. He was selected as a dancer to be part of the National Choreographers Initiative 2007 in Irvine, California. In May of 2008, he participated in the event 4X4 Ballet Project with Oregon Ballet Theatre, Pacific Northwest Ballet, San Francisco Ballet and Eugene Ballet presented by White Bird in Portland Oregon. In August of 2009 was invited to Caracas by celebrated Venezuelan conductor Gustavo Dudamel, to participate in the tribute Viva Nebrada!

He is also, an independent choreographer based in Eugene, Oregon, who has created pieces for Drop Dance Collective, The Woman Space Foundation (Fundraiser event for abused women in Eugene-Oregon) and collaborated with Toni Pimble in the Eugene Ballet productions of “Pink Martini” and "American spirit". The National Dance Project and the New England Foundation for the Arts selected him as part of the Regional Dance Development Initiative (RDDI), in Portland-Oregon, among nine other dance artists from the Pacific Northwest region. As a result, Duran received a grant in Helena, Montana to create a piece about Evelyn Cameron, an English born Montana pioneer who photographed life in Montana during the 20 th century.

In November of 2008, he was the winner of the dancemedia.com Pointe Magazine Video of the Month. His latest work Without the Cover was featured in Eugene Ballet’s Dark Side of the Moon program. He was appointed as the resident choreographer of Alaska Dance Theatre in 2011.
